District-Nandurbar

The economy of Nandurbar is primarily agrarian with approximately 83% of the population is engaged in agriculture. Amongst other allied activities, animal husbandry, dairy and fishery are the subsidiary occupations for small and marginal farmers and landless labors of the district. The major challenges in the district are dispersed settlements of the tribal farmers, low education, poor financial literacy, poor quality of natural resources and lack of exposure to modern farming practices and techniques. Therefore, concentrated efforts are required to generate further income of the farmers by capacitating the local community and form collectives for better market linkages, thereby promoting sustainable agriculture practices.

Axis Bank Foundation has joined hands with Development Support Centre (DSC) in order to capitalize on the potential of the agricultural sector in the state so as to improve productivity and thus enhance the income of farmers.

DSC is a knowledge and resource organization for Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM). Other than direct implementation, DSC provides technical knowledge and capacity building support to several NGOs, Government agencies and other stakeholders in the field of Participatory Natural Resource Management and sustainable livelihoods. This project aims to enhance the well-being of 45,000 households with a focus on small and marginal farmers of 150 villages in Nandurbar. Development Support Centre (DSC) aims to work with the local community to facilitate solutions through village development plans, training on modern agricultural practices, exposure visits on agriculture based livelihood generation and soil and water conservation methods, collectivization etc. This enables the local community to gradually take lead for sustainability of the project.
