Dhan Foundation (Balasore)

State - Odisha

District - Balasore

The entire Balasore economy is based on rural sector as a mere 12% of the working population resides in urban areas. Odisha as a state is vulnerable to multiple disasters. Due to its sub-tropical location, the state is prone to tropical cyclones, storm surges and tsunamis. Its densely populated coastal plains are the alluvial deposits of its river systems. The rivers in these areas with heavy load of silt have very little carrying capacity, resulting in frequent floods, only to be compounded by breached embankments. Though a large part of the State comes under Earthquake Risk Zone-II (Low Damage Risk Zone), the Brahmani-Mahanadi rivers and their deltaic areas come under Earthquake Risk Zone-III (Moderate Damage Risk Zone) covering 43 out of the 103 urban local bodies of the State.

Axis Bank Foundation has partnered with DHAN Foundation, to contribute to restoring lives, reviving livelihoods and strengthening community resilience through disaster preparedness and risk reduction in Phailin Cyclone affected areas of Balasore district of Odisha promoting sustainable, integrated development in several villages.

The objective is to reach out to the economically backward families and provide improved income security by restoring their livelihoods. It provides training to all vulnerable households in the project villages to handle disasters and reduce risk. Measures are taken to improve reproductive health of pregnant women in terms of maternal and infant well-being. The project also focuses on improving adolescent health through anaemia reduction by linking with mainstream institutions and behavioural change communication.
