The major population of the cattle, goat and sheep is reared by the pastoral community which is spread across the Himalayas, Rajasthan, Gujarat and the Deccan Plateau. The pastoralists play a key role in the rehabilitation and sustainable management of the ecosystem and contribute in providing milk, meat, leather and wool for the community at large. However, the pastoralists are becoming a vanishing breed as the government and the private organizations have made very few attempts to reach out to them for their livelihood support as they are mobile in nature.

Axis Bank Foundation has partnered with Sahjeevan to improve the livelihoods of the pastoralist community in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Telangana by reaching out to 32000 households.

The project aims to build dairy-based livelihoods by training and creating awareness in the community to provide germ-free milk to collection centers regularly to enhance their income. They also promote marketing of milk products with e-retailers or entrepreneurs with the market and create a sheep-wool enterprise by using wool for apparel industry, as a bio-fertilizer or as an insulation material for construction of buildings. This project also aims to have native vegetation in the area by removal of invasive weeds. Continuous research and advocacy with different stakeholders are planned for these interventions.
