Lend a Hand India

State - Maharashtra

Districts - Pune, Sangli, Satara, Solapur

There is a significant disconnect between the education imparted and practical or real life skills needed, especially in rural India. The existing education system is neither participative nor encourages any comprehension abilities among its students. As a result, many of these students remain unemployed after completing their education and lack the confidence to even start a small venture. Lend-A-Hand India (LAHI) was started in 2007 with the objective of providing job and life skill training to young boys and girls from high schools in rural parts of India by making it a part of the school curriculum. Their program has been formally recognized by government of Maharashtra as part of the high school curriculum and has helped increase enrolment, better performance in classes and a decrease in dropout rates.

Axis Bank Foundation is involved with Lend-A-Hand India to create and implement a curriculum as part of the existing secondary school education curriculum which will provide students with significant hands on experience and practical livelihood skills.

This curriculum introduces students to theory and practice on subjects like Basic Engineering, Energy and Environment, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry and Home and Health. The variety of skills to which students would be introduced are: carpentry, plumbing, electrical wiring, welding, fabrication, construction, surveying, agriculture, animal husbandry and pathology etc. This intervention will enable the students to make informed and appropriate choices about their post-high school education, encourage scientific thinking and give them an opportunity to learn skills which they are interested in.
